Professor Pea

Hopefully the first of many Professor Peas, I am a Biology teacher with 12 years’ experience in the UK and Jordan. I have taught both the UK national curriculum and the IB and wanted a fun way for “reluctant scientists” to access material about their bodies. Having worked with pupils from 4 to 18 years old, I am happy to engage the imagination of children of various ages in the hope of making them curious about Biology.

I started writing the World of Cells series for my godchildren, some of whom feature in the Seb the Red compilation reading. Having read a few never-to-be-named books at bedtime which sent me to sleep as much as the child next to me, I wanted some simple stories that work on various levels. Once embedded in the wonderful world of our cells and realising the educational value of that perspective, it became important to me that, although simplified, the basic biology is correct. I would like students to look back at the World of Cells when they reach the ages for taking (inter)national exams and for them to realise that their learning outcomes are no more difficult to remember than a child’s story.

I hope that the World of Cells series enables children to understand their bodies in a new way and also respect the bodies of others. As someone who has always been smaller than average, I am keen that the reader, whatever their size relative to their peers, sees themselves through the stories as a giant!

Always keen for adventure and generally up for volunteering opportunities, I have: spotted an anaconda in the Amazon, had lessons in paragliding, been a dancer in the London Olympic Opening Ceremony 2012, sung in an opera tour of the West Bank, hatched chicken eggs in a cardboard box in my classroom, cycled the length of the UK, sung on the soundtrack of Harry Potter, instigated and developed the Health and Relationships syllabus in my predominantly-Muslim school, sung God Save Our Gracious Queen for the opening of Tesco in Jordan and most recently been a scorer for the winning golfer in an international golf tournament without initially knowing the difference between any types of golf clubs.

Thank you for visiting!
